OILY SKIN & OIL CONTROL

Once upon a time, oily skin was treated with harsh astringents and barrier-stripping ingredients, which triggered a cycle of increased oil production. These days, skincare for oily skin is all about balance, balance, balance. Modern skincare formulas allow people with oily skin to combat excess shine and enlarged pores while enjoying healthy, youthfully luminous skin at the same time.

FAQs

On a physiological level, oily skin occurs when the skin’s sebaceous (oil) glands produce excess amounts of oil. Everybody has sebaceous glands that secrete oil, but those with dry or normal skin produce less. There are a number of factors that can cause increased oil production, such as genetics, stress, fluctuating hormones (e.g., the teen years) and humidity.

First and foremost, do not use overly aggressive skincare treatments that strip the skin’s natural lipid barrier of its healthy levels of oil. This will cause irritation and possibly trigger even more oil production. Instead, clarify pores and remove excess oil by choosing products that contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, then follow with a calming, balancing and replenishing product. Use a gentle facial cleanser in the morning, at night and after strenuous activities, such as workouts. Always use an SPF moisturizer during the day and a moisturizing repair crème at night—contrary to popular belief, even oily skin requires moisture and hydration to function optimally. Depending on your skin, you might want to consider oil-free products, although some people can take small quantities in their serums and creams. Always use sunscreen and try blotting papers throughout the day to remove surface oil.

If oily skin is nourished and managed properly, it doesn’t have to be a “bad” thing. Oily skin that isn’t taken care of, however, can lead to breakouts and other inconveniences, such as makeup not staying put throughout the day.

The best skincare products for oily skin are formulated with scientifically backed ingredients that remove excess oil and clear pores while respecting the skin barrier or offer moisturizing and anti-aging benefits while mattifying skin. For example, our CLEAR CELL clarifying salicylic tonic features beta and alpha hydroxy acids that help exfoliate and remove excess shine from the skin, as well as a plant-based complex with lilac extract that helps to minimize the appearance of redness while imparting a mattifying effect. The CLEAR CELL restoring serum contains peptides and vitamin C to offer hydrating, brightening and anti-aging benefits, while absorbing surface oils for a perfectly balanced look.

Oily skin tends to form fine lines and wrinkles more slowly than those with drier skin types since the excess oil naturally provides additional moisture that keeps skin plump and pliable.
