Ozempic Face: What It Is and How to Avoid It

If you’re one of the millions of Americans taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, you may be noticing an unsettling side effect: facial volume loss.

Commonly referred to as “Ozempic Face,” the sudden loss of skin density is a new wrinkle in the weight loss journey for many. But don’t be alarmed, there’s a solution that can help you avoid the loss of facial volume that can leave you looking older.

What is Ozempic Face?

First, it’s important to know that Ozempic Face is a broadly used term for the visible loss of facial volume linked to all  GLP-1 medications. It is not exclusive to Ozempic users – but a side effect of the significant weight loss resulting from the entire range of GLP-1 agonists.

Over time, as weight loss accelerates, you’re likely to notice visible changes to your face that make you appear older than when you started out. Signs of Ozempic Face include sagging skin, particularly in the cheeks and jawline, hollowness around the eyes, and a rapid loss of facial volume leading to a gaunt, aged appearance.

What causes Ozempic Face?

While similar in how they work, weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are semaglutide-based GLP-1 receptor agonists; Mounjaro and Zepbound, on the other hand, are tirzepatide dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists.

What they have in common is the GLP-1 agonist, the substance driving the efficacy (and popularity) of these breakthrough medications for weight loss.

What is GLP-1? Well, GLP-1 is an incretin hormone that stimulates insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying to regulate blood sugar. It also promotes satiety, or the feeling of being full, which indirectly aids in weight loss.

But it’s not all upside. The downside is that GLP-1 agonists can have a significant impact on the visible appearance of your skin. The most common GLP-1 skin changes include:

  • breakdown of connective tissue
  • change in the quality of the skin
  • decrease in the skin’s ability to retain its shape
  • loss of fat, leading to a significantly older appearance with sagging skin and deep folds at the mouth and jowls

How can I avoid Ozempic Face?

As long as you continue to use GLP-1 medications for weight loss, you are susceptible to Ozempic Face. Why? The answer is in the numbers. The loss of connective tissue due to weight loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro ranges from 25% to 39% of the total weight lost. Preventing 100% of the resultant effects of that is unavoidable.

The good news is that you can avoid some of the downside effects by adding a firming face cream formulated to address loss of skin volume and facial density.

To treat loss of facial volume and other signs of Ozempic Face, Image Skincare collaborated with Dr. Raja Sivamani, an Integrative Dermatologist and Adjunct Associate Professor of Dermatology at UC Davis. Dr. Sivamani identified the root causes of facial changes due to rapid weight loss.

Working collaboratively with Dr. Sivamani, Image Skincare co-founder and plastic surgeon Dr. Marc Ronert created a breakthrough solution: VOL.U.LIFT™ GLP-1 4D Skin Rebound Complex. It's the first and only treatment developed for facial changes due to rapid weight loss when using GLP-1 agonists.
